Sri Lanka becomes a maize exporter

which used to produce only 15% of the country’s maize requirement has achieved self sufficiency in maize and the first 50,000 Metric Tons are to be exported to , Taiwan and Middle East countries this year.

 

The country’s maize demand is 180,000 MT per year and during harvesting of the first season a yield of 200, 000 MT have been obtained.

 

The Wayamba Traders, which is a company specializing in imports, exports and local merchandise of agro-commodities such as sesame seeds, black pepper, desiccated coconut, nutmeg, cinnamon, garcinia, soya beans, maize and other agricultural products has received orders for maize from Canada, Taiwan and Middle East countries.

 

Sources from the company said that they have established forward sales buying agreements with 2,220 farmers in the Anuradhapura district giving them a guaranteed price of Rs. 35 per kilo. They said that since the maize plant takes only around three and a half months to mature, farmers earn a profit of around Rs 150,000 growing two and a half acres of maize.

 

The of Agriculture has also made arrangements to export maize to several countries.  of Agriculture Yapa Abeywardena said 10,000 MT of maize will be exported to Taiwan before the 22nd of this month.  The added that 5,000 MT of rice will also be exported very soon.

2012 Boat Show commences Friday

The Boat Show 2012 exhibition organized by the Boat Building Technology Improvement Institute of will be held from May 18-20 at the BMICH. The of Industrial Development and the Export Development Board under the of Export Development and International Trade are supporting this event.

 

Exhibitors from 15 countries  over including the Maldives, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and are to participate in this exhibition which will also have a forum to exchange ideas.

 

The exhibition will also boost where visitors, will be able to take part in leisure activities such as kite-surfing, diving, jet-skiing and whale-watching by riding in a boat.

 

The objective of the exhibition is to provide a forum for all the related business sectors involved with the boating industry to display and promote their sectors to potential clients.

 

These sectors include suppliers of leisure, pleasure, industrial and commercial, fishing vessels, material, engines, interior fixtures, fittings, electrical and electronic devices, navigation equipment, on board safety equipment, water sports gear and equipment, credit insurance, providers of service to industry such as investment promotion, marketing and export facilitation, repairs to boats hull, engines and other equipment and training providers in boat building, sailing, navigation and seamen training.

 

Sri Lanka has witnessed a rapid boom in the boat building industry following the end of the three decade war in 2009. Sri Lanka has recorded 152 percent growth in boat building industry compared to 2010 by earning 149 million U.S. dollars in 2011. It has been planned to develop this sector to bring 500 million U.S. dollars in 2015 by exporting boats.

 

At present Sri Lanka exports leisure boats, speed boats, fishing boats and other vessels to the Europe, Seychelles, Mauritius, Somalia, Djibouti, India, , Bangladesh and the Maldives.

Book entitled “Gota’s War” released

The book titled Gota’s War’ written by the veteran journalist C.A.Chandrapema was released yesterday at Water’s Edge, Battaramulla amid a large gathering. The first copy of the book was handed over to who was the chief guest of the function.

 

The book covers events relating to ethnic conflict from 1956 onwards and the 30 years of terrorist atrocities up to the end of it at the Nandikadal lagoon.

 

The author has said that he named the book as “Gota’s War” since Defense Gotabhaya Rajapaksa made a tremendous role in unifying and coordinating the operations against the terrorists while he received complete political backing and direction from the Commander in Chief President Mahinda Rajapaksa.  He said that he has held discussions with the political parties as well as senior and junior members of the to obtain material for his book and it took 18 months for him to complete the volume.

 

Senior Dr. Sarath Amunugama and President Secretary Lalith Weeratunge made analytical lectures on the book.

World’s second best Accounting Professionals in Sri Lanka

Sri has been recognised as world’s second largest pool of qualified accounting professionals, second only to the and an excellent niche for outsourcing for Finance and Accounting.

 

In addition to this the Sri Lankan BPO industry has the fastest-growing recruitment sector for jobs in , and has a big demand from international customers.

 

This has been stated by the Chairman of SLASSCOM (Sri Lanka Association of Software and Services Companies) Sujiva Dewaraja addressing a function held in recently.  He has said that Sri Lanka produces highly-trained BPO workers who are very versatile in their field, International clients including those from European countries are keen to work with Sri Lanka’s BPO sector because Sri Lankan BPO employees are capable of handling high-profile jobs.

 

He has pointed out that there is a BPO facility at Seenigama who help in the auctioning of well known artifacts involved with world-renowned auction houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, and the Seenigama BPO is a good example of how and Communication technology (ICT) can improve the lives of people living in the rural areas. He has said that providing employment and career opportunities to the youth, BPO centres can bring in plenty of revenue and profits that can rake in an annual income of over Rs. 2 million.
