Sri Lanka has made significant progress in terms of breastfeeding

Posted by admin 15 September, 2008 (0) Comment
ImageAccording to UNICEF Sri Lanka maintains a high rate for mothers’ breastfeeding their babies during the first six months of the baby’s life. UNICEF said that Sri Lanka has achieved a 50% increase in this number.
In line with the World Breastfeeding Week, the country has taken several initiatives led by the Ministry of Health and supported by UNICEF which has also served to increase the country’s rate of exclusive breastfeeding from 50% to 75% from 2000 to 2007.

Consistent breastfeeding of a baby results in good health and is a strong factor in preventing infant death.

Although there has been progress in the developing world over the past 15 years, only 38% of infants under six months of age are breastfed. This compares poorly with Sri Lanka’s 75%.

UNICEF says that recent scientific studies have found that education and support for mothers significantly extends the number of months that they breastfeed, and these measures are especially helpful in promoting exclusive breastfeeding.

In a developing country, a child who is breastfed is almost three times more likely to survive infancy than a child who is not, UNICEF’s Dr Renuka Jayatissa said.

Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week in Sri Lanka (15-19 September), UNICEF, along with the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), is recommending the provision of increased professional and informal support for breastfeeding mothers.

The aim of World Breastfeeding Week is to promote exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life which yields tremendous health benefits, providing critical nutrients, protection from deadly diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhoea and fostering growth and development. Continued breast feeding after six months, for up to two years of age or beyond, combined with safe and appropriate complementary feeding, is the optimal approach to child feeding.
