Archives of the Government Film Unit archives to be upgraded
Some of Sri Lanka’s finest historical and artistic documentary films, currently archived at the Government Film Unit will be preserved under a special project with the assistance of the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation.
Under this project one hundred documentary films will be conserved and digitalized to enable future generations of Sri Lankans to view and enjoy the glorious cultural and film heritage of the country.
Speaking at the occasion, Minister Yapa said, “Mahinda Chantana states that it is prime responsibility of the Government to ensue that all historical and cultural heritage sites of Sri Lanka are preserved and gifted the above objective.”
“The Government has already taken steps to construct a new building to house the Government Film Unit,” he added.
He further said that the Government Film Unit, established in 1948, is the only institution of its kind in Sri Lanka and has filmed almost every significant, political, social and cultural event over several decades.
“Currently there are more than 100 films in the care of the Government Film Unit. It is planned that some of Sri Lanka’s finest historical and artistic documentary films will be preserved under the US Ambassador’s fund. This should enable future generation of Sri Lankas to view and enjoy the cultural an film heritage of this country,” he explained.
Speaking at the occasion Ambassador Blake said that he looks forward to encouraging the interest in preserving the cultural and film heritage in Sri Lanka and to working closely with the Ministry on such projects in the future as well.

Construction work of the Nugegoda fly over to begin in October
The last discussion to decide the date of the begin the construction work of Nugegoda fly over was held today (17).
Acting Minister of Highways and Road Development T.B. Ekenayeke told Lankapuvath that the construction work of the Nugegoda flyover is due to start in October. Length of the flyover is 261m and estimated cost of the project is Rs.320 million. The construction work of the fly over is due to finish in 03 month.
Flyover is consists of four road lines. Sri Lanka Access engineering and Marbian Johnson Company in Britain will be taking over the construction of flyover.
Objective of the project is to ease the traffic congestion in Nugegooda area.

If Prabhakaran is captured alive, we are ready to extradicte him to India - President
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in a cordial discussion with the Foreign Correspondents Association on Monday night (15th) reiterated that LTTE leader Prabhakaran will be handed over to India on his capture if India so wishes.The President added that the mission to capture Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman will be pursued vigorously and observed that Prabhakaran is wanted for the killing of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
“If LTTE needs a ceasefire, the precondition is that they shoud surrender arms,” President said answering a question raised by a journalist.

Jets raid high profile LTTE hideout in Kilinochchi
SLAF fighter jets launched successive air strikes at key LTTE locations in Kilinochchi and Mullaittivu including a ‘high profile’ LTTE hideout located in the Vattakachchi area, Wednesday (Sep 17) at around 6.35a.m.
The targets were acquired with precision on reliable ground information received Air Force Spokesperson, Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said.
The target at Vattakachchi area has been identified as a secret LTTE hideout and was engaged on real-time information received of the presence of a key LTTE figure, defence intelligence sources said. This is a site most frequented by the terror chief, and LTTE is expected to remain tight lipped on the casualty figures, defence observes state.
Heavy traffic in enemy communication circuits was experienced immediately after the attack and subsequently had died-out, maintaining silence over the circuits, sources said citing LTTE electronic emission and radio monitoring reports.
Meanwhile, an LTTE ammo and arms storage was hit in a similar air strike, 3km North of Udayarkattukulama, Mullaittivu, at around 6.30a.m., Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara further said.
