Well done, budding scholars

Three girls caught the attention of the whole nation yesterday with their remarkable achievement and appeared excited despite their smiling faces as media personnel approached them to find out about their success story.

They were Anjana Sajini Senadeera of Lindsay Girl’s School; Mihindini Amasha Hapuarachhchi from Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Don Mehesha of St Andrews Puttlam. They came first in the Island with 183 marks at the grade five scholarship examination. The results were out yesterday.

Anjana who hails from Angoda said she used to get up at 4:30 am each morning to study.

“I used to do past papers and my mother corrected them,” she said. She said she watched TV only moderately.

Anjana paid tribute to her mother and said she encouraged her and gave her all the support she needed. One significant thing about Anjana was that she had not attended any tuition classes.

She also paid tribute to her class teacher Dharasni Wedesinghe moulded her from grade three. This teacher had given up her transfer just for Anjana and stayed back mainly to teacher her.

Apart from her studies Anjana excels in sports and had won a medal in the National swimming Meet and also plays Net Ball. She also has a passion for dancing and under trains at Channa Wijewardene Dancing School.

Mihindini Amasha Hapuarachchi from Sirimavo Bandaranaike School in Colombo had attended only one tuition class and revised her school work daily.

She has a passion for reading and has a home library. This has helped her to improve her general knowledge and knows the Mahawansa by heart according to her mother Tharitha Disssanayake. She said the credit should go to child’s grand mother who had looked after her.

“I have not been able to spend much time with her as I was busy with my work, Tharitha who is the AGA of Ayagama said.

Mihindini said she did not expect to become first in the Island as the paper was tough. She paid tribute to her teachers and said it was the school which helped her to achieve this feat.

The significant feature of both Anjana and Mihindini is that they are the only children in their respective families.

Don Mahesha who is from St Andrews Puttlam said she also did not attend any tuition class and gathered the knowledge she needed from news papers and the TV.

She said her father was a solider and serving in the frontlines. Her teachers encouraged her quite a lot.

Her mother Upuli Hayasinth Fernando said they hoped to admit Mahesha to Ladies College Colombo.

Mahesha created history by becoming the first grade five student from the Puttlam District to become the first in the Island at the grade five scholarship exam.

The message from these children to their fellow students was clear. They said commitment and dedication would bring desired success in life.

President leaves to attend the UN Assembly in New York

ImagePresident Mahinda Rajapaksa left the island yesterday (19) to attend the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly.

The 63rd Sessions opened in New York on the 16th of this month and President Rajapaksa will be among 100 heads of states attending this year’s session.

The 63rd session of the UN General Assembly, which will be chaired by UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, will focus on current world trends including global health issues, poverty alleviation and the impact of climate change.

The general debate, addressed by Heads of State and Government leaders as well as Ministers will begin on Tuesday the 23rd. This year’s session will also focus on several issues pertaining to the implementation of Africa’s Development Treaty.

Fr. Miguel D’Escota Brokman, a former Foreign Minister of Nicaragua is the President of the 63rd Sessions.

On the sidelines of the sessions, President Rajapakse will have meetings with several Heads of State or Government, including the Indian Prime Minister.

A high profile meeting will be held on the 22nd under the theme of “Challenges Ahead” and on the 25th a special discussion will take place over the Millennium Development Goals.

Army Commander Reviews Security Situation in Yala

Commander Of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka accompanied by a few senior officers of the Army Headquarters, flew to Yala Saturday (20) morning in a bid to review the security situation in the area.

Commander, Area Headquarters Hambantota, Colonel Devinda Perera received the Army Commander on his arrival at the airstrip.

Arrangements in force to ensure security in the area and adjoining villages were discussed at length during the meeting held at the Area Headquarters auditorium.

Senior officers of the Army and the Police including senior DIG, D.W. Prathapasinghe responsible for the security in the area attended the meeting.

Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka gave further instructions on future security arrangements before turning back to Colombo the same day (20).

Sri Lanka to test imported milk powder for quality

The Consumer Affairs Authority has decided to seek the assistance of foreign experts to monitor the standard of milk powder products imported to Sri Lanka.

Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo yesterday, Trade, and Consumer Services Minister Bandula Gunawardena stressed after the milk powder tragedy in China, the government of Sri Lankan has decided to check the standard of the imported milk powder.

The Minister also said that foreign experts would obtain the samples of imported milk powder products during this week and the samples will then subjected to quality standard examinations in laboratories abroad the inspections quality certificates will be issued on the products.
