CB allows ‘limited depreciation’ of Rupee
The Sri Lankan rupee today declined to 110 vs. US Dollar as the Central Bank made a policy decision to allow limited depreciation of the currency. The Rupee had been trading at Rs 108.00 to the Dollar in the recent past.
The Central Bank’s decision has been prompted by “the recent sharp decline in export prices, prospects of lower export demand due to a likelihood of further slowing down in the global economy and the recent sharp appreciation of the US dollar against most major international currencies”.
The Central Bank has favoured “a limited depreciation of the Sri Lanka Rupee so as to enable the real sector to maintain
Sri Lanka’s export competitiveness across all export and import competing industries”.

Ranil’s objection overruled
The objection filed by the Opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe against the Contempt of Court charges leveled against him, was overruled by the District Court today.

Measures to promote sports in Hambantota
keeping to the project of promoting Volleyball, the national sport of Sri Lanka, 200 volleyball sports equipment were donated to the Youth Society in the Hambantota district by the Minister of Youth Affairs Pavithra Wanniarrachchi.
Addressing the function which was held at the Tangalle Public grounds, Minister Wanniarrachchi said that her Ministry has allocated Rs 485 lakhs for the development of 4000 Volleyball courts Island wide which is already in progress. The necessary sports equipment will also be given to them she said.
The reconstruction and modification work of the Maharagama Heiyanthuduwa Indoor Stadium is already under way. Meanwhile the work on 15 Stadiums Island wide including the eastern province was under way stated the Minister.
The Minister of Ports and Aviation and Irrigation and Water Management, Minister Chamal Rajapaksa, Secretary to the Ministry Mr S Virithamulla and the President of the National Youth Council, Mr Bhashwara Gunarathne were among those who were present at the ceremony.

Munchee Lemon Puff free of Melamine
The good name Ceylon Biscuits Limited was justified today after their popular brand of Munchee Lemon Puff was cleared by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health following the receipt of test results of market samples of the product sent for testing overseas by the Food Control Administration Unit of the Ministry of Health Care and Nutrition.
An adverse internet reporting originating from Switzerland triggered an unwarranted suspicion on the Munchee Lemon Puff Brand and Ceylon Biscuits acting as a responsible corporate and in terms of company policy based on ISO 22000 (HACCP) procedure, decided to immediately withdraw the product from the market in the interest of consumer safety and peace of mind till the government concluded their independent investigations, quoted Ceylon Biscuits Limited.
The Ministry of Health confirmed that the tests results of the random market samples taken by them and sent to the Health Science Authority of the Ministry of Health in Singapore have been received and that Munchee Lemon Puff had been confirmed as completely free of melamine.
They further stated that the product has been removed from the list of prohibited items.
Meanwhile, Minister of Trade, Marketing Development Co-Operatives and Consumer Services Bandula Gunawardena said samples of several food items in Sri Lanka have been send to Thailand and Singapore for more laboratory tests.
In a statement to the Media today (30) Minister Gunawardena said Munchee Lemon Puff is Free of Melamine.
He made this statement on behalf of the Consumer Affairs Authority.
