An LTTE terrorist was caught by Sri Lankan Army troops while attempting to flee via sea route at Kirankulam, South of Batticaloa, today (July 4) morning.
According to military sources, the terrorist identified as Nallarathnam Mahendraraja alias Mohan, a former LTTE Batticaloa terrorist was spotted by an army soldier on patrol at the Kirankulam beach. The soldier on detecting an isolate boat moving across the shallow waters with one man on board apprehended the boat, the sources said. The suspect has suddenly grabbed the soldier’s weapon and had opened fire while being searched.
Two more soldiers in close proximity ran to the place but they were also fired upon by the terrorist who by then was holding the soldiers gun. However, soldiers in the area managed to over power the terrorist after shooting at him, Army said. Police immediately rushed to the seen and took the terrorist leader with gun-shot injuries into custody. One of the soldiers succumbed to injuries due to gun fire triggered by the terrorist who has now been admitted to Batticaloa hospital under Police custody.
An intensified search that was conducted on the terrorist’s person, four passport photographs, one Identity Card, one cyanide capsule and Rs. 16500.00 in cash were found by the troops.
The Kathankudy police is conducting further investigations.
