Troops make further progress in Wanni amid heavy resistance
Defence sources in the frontlines reveal that troops during yesterday’s operations (Oct 5) kept the momentum of their advance in the south of Kilinochchi and the west of Mankulam areas despite heavy resistance from LTTE.
According to the sources, troops of 57 division operating in the east of Akkarayankulam area confronted with a group of terrorist around 8.30 AM . A soldier was killed in this incident while the exact damage caused to the enemy was not known.
In a similar incident occurred in the same area, around 1 PM a soldier was killed and two others suffered injuries. Troops claimed heavy damages to the enemy.
Later, in the evening troops attacked two terror bunkers located in the west of Akkarayankulam area in separate incidents. Troops claimed 3 terrorists were either killed or wounded in one incident and confirmed 3 terrorists were killed in the other.
During a separate search in the east of Akkarayankulam, troops found a decomposed body of an LTTE cadre along with a T-56 riffle at 2.45 PM.
Meanwhile, 57 division troops operating in the eastern flank of the Kilinochchi front attack an LTTE bunker located in the Vannivilankulam area at 10.20 AM. A soldier was killed and 3 others suffered injuries. During subsequent search, troops found 3 T-56 riffles. Troops claimed heavy damages to the terrorists. Also, a soldier suffered injuries due to a booby trap explosion occurred elsewhere, around 3.50 PM.
Intercepted LTTE radio transmissions revealed that 7 terrorists were killed and 9 others were injured due to artillery fire directed at the north of Akkarayankulam and west of Iranamadu areas during the day.
