There has been a record increase in the containers handled by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority with an increase of 12.5% recorded in December, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority revealed.According to the Ports Authority, in December 2008, 136268 containers had been handled and the figure had increased to increased to 153317 in December 2009.
Meanwhile the total containers handled by the Colombo Port, has increased by 19.2%, another record. After the war victory in May, the northern entrance of the harbour was opened on the advice of the President providing easier access to the ships that use the harbour.
