The President made these statements while speaking at the presentation of titles to over 1300 families who received lands and houses from the National Housing Development Authority at Temple Trees yesterday.
The President pointed out that former President JR Jayewardene tried to amend his own Constitution in the last five years of his rule without success and the efforts taken by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to amend the Constitution became fruitless.
He noted that the mandate given by the people to eradicate terrorism was fulfilled by the Government led by him within four years and the people have entrusted him with a responsibility of developing the country.
He added that political instability at that time resulted in deterring the development of the country and the Government is in the process of
removing the impediments that lie in the way to development.
The President stressed that the housing problem of the people should be solved gradually.
He said the land extent of the country would not expand though the population is on the increase day by day. He said the people should
not think of them but the future and the well-being of their children.
