Clean energy through solar power

The Ministry of Finance and Planning has taken steps for the introduction of clean energy by solar electricity generation system.

The Government of Japan has agreed to provide a grant of Japanese Yen 860 million (Approx. Rs. 1075 million) to construct a 400 KW grid connected solar power generation plant at Baruthandanda, Hambantota.

This grant is extended by the Government of Japan with a view to help the efforts taken by the Government of Sri Lanka to address the issue on climate change and to access the clean energy.

Development of renewable energy sources using solar power is very vital due to the fact that only hydro power sources are used as renewable energy sources at present. The establishment of this power plant can be described as an attempt to change the perception of developers, lending agencies and equity investors on the performance, environmental impact and sustainability of commercial scale solar power generation by demonstration.

The project will be implemented by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority under the supervision of the Ministry of Power and Energy.
