“Expanding the ports network will strategically help the economic development of the country. The government has initiated a number of special projects to fulfill this aspiration. The Government will widen Colombo Harbor by adding another 286 hectares from the sea”, the Secretary to the Ministry of Ports and Aviation Ranjith de Silva said at a media conference held at Ministry of Mass Media and Information yesterday.
The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Dr. Priyath Bandu Wickrema said the country can enjoy more privileges after commissioning the Hambantota harbour project. He also noted that Sri Lanka will play a significant role in the international shipping industry in the coming years. The Hambantota port will operate as a technical and supply hub in the Indian ocean.
The Chairman elaborated that thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities will be created by this particular project. The construction process of the port is being carried out in four stages. The chairman also said that the first phase of the construction work of the port will be completed by next November. The second phase of the port will commence before end of this year
