Discussions were held to explore the possibilities of securing gas from Russia’s biggest Gas Company, Gazprom, when the President recently toured Russia.
Gazprom also deliberated with visiting President Rajapaksa last month on exploring for oil off the coast of the island. It is believed that Sri Lanka will be able to save a massive amount foreign exchange by directly importing gas sans going through other countries.
Russian Embassy sources in Colombo confirmed that the deal between Russia and Sri Lanka is likely to be finalized during the course of the year.
