Election fever hots up in the South

Election fever in  Southern Sri Lanka gradually hots up with campaigns for contest  gathering momentum from yesterday as nominations  closed at noon for the upcoming provincial election to the Southern Provincial Council.

Political parties in the fray began their house to house and pocket meeting campaigns from last evening in a quiet atmosphere.

The ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) was seen in full gear with its candidates campaigning vigorously.

Less enthusiasm was seen among candidates of the major opposition United National Party.The UNP’s organisational power and capacity looked at a low ebb.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna was not active at all yesterday in its’ campaign,according to reports reaching Colombo from the South.

Reports said there appeared  more interest by independent groups than the candidates of the JVP after nominations closed yesterday with regard to the campaign.

The UPFA has expressed  confidence in winning the SPC election in a convincing manner.

The UNP,through its’ self proclaimed stalwart,SB Dissanayake has conceeded defeat  even before nominations closed as Dissanayake told the media that the UNP will not win the SPC election.
