It will manufacture high-quality yarn using plastic waste as raw material, and these yarns will be used in the manufacturing of a range of brushes for sanitary maintenance industry. The plant has obtained the Green Certificate from the US, will also help reduce waste and protect the environment.
Beira Group produces brushes, brush backs and fibres to tailor – made specifications and competes with brush making companies from China, Vietnam, Australia and Europe. It also supplies unprocessed, semi-processed and processed products to the sanitary maintenance industry worldwide.(niz).
2011 is to be named as the National Year of Cinema.
The Government Spokesman and the Minister of Mass Media and Information has said that Sri Lanka has decided to name 2011 as the
National Year of Cinema. He says that this decision aims to upgrade local cinema industry. Accordingly, the Presidential Cinema Awards
Festival will be recommenced next year.
Minister Keheliya Rambukwella revealed these facts at a meeting held at the National Film Corporation with cinema artistes.
The Minister also disclosed that it has also been decided to set up a Cinema Institute with the aim to impart knowledge to the cinema
artistes and technicians, and establish new cinema halls in the country. (niz).

311 Rural Roads in the Kandy District Developed this year.
The Upcountry Development Authority of the Ministry of Economic Development has spent Rs. 300 Million for concreting and developing
311 rural roads this year. These development work has been carried out in 310 Grama Niladhari Divisions of the Divisional Secretariats of Galagedera, Hataraliyadda, Pujapitiya, Akurana and Harispattuwa in the Kandy district.
Mr. Kapila Ariyawansa, Media Director of the Ministry states that Rs. 46.95 was spent for concreting 57 roads in the Hataraliyadda
Divisional Secretariat Division, while Rs. 55.19 Million and Rs. 67.37 Million were spent for concreting 58 roads in the Galagedera
D.S.Division, and 83 roads in the Harispattuwa D.S.Division respectively.
The amount allocated for 57 roads in the Pujapitiya D.S.Division was Rs. 46.95. For development 56 roads in the Akurana D.S. Dision Rs. 28.83 Million has been allocated. All above road development work covers 60 kms. (niz)
Islandwide Exhibition programme to eradicate alcoholism
A Forum/exhibition titled “If we are to win…. What should be done to Alcohol?, for making successful the “Mathata Thitha” programme of the Gama Neguma concept will be held at Public Library Auditorium in Colombo, from 27th to 29th July. The Forut Institue of the Sri Lanka SamurdhI Authority of the Ministry of Economic Development Ministry has organized this exhibition and it will be held from 8.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.
The Director General of the Samurdhi Authority, Attorney at Law Mr. Bandula Thilakasiri said that at exhibition people’s various beliefs,
behaviours, and other matters relating to alcohol will be put into challenge at this exhibition and the opinions raised in this regard
would be utilized to build up an “Alcohol Free” Society. The exhibition will also display the progress that have been made by
the Sri Lanka Samurdhi Authority to make the “Mathata Thitha” concept a reality. The Samurdhi Director General Mr. Bandula Thilasiri said the Authority also plans to hold this exhibition in other districts shortly.(niz).
