A new Jetty is being built in the Negombo lagoon with Japanese assistance amounting to Rs. 314 Million. The construction of the Jetty funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency will provide facilities for tourists to have a boat tour in the lagoon and see the enormous resources in flora and fauna, especially in its mangroves. The construction work, overseen by the Lank Reclamation Department, is expected to be completed next month.
This jetty is built on the Custom House Road, Negombo, close to the Hamilton Canal which runs up to the mouth of Maha Oya River.
Negombo with its long sandy beaches and vibrant fishing industry which remained a tourist attraction location continuously, and with the increase in the arrival of tourists following the end of the war, and due to its close proximity to the Katunayake International Airport has got re-invigorated as a bubbling tourist location in the Western province.(niz)
