The Moragahakanda-Kaluganga Irrigation Project is progressing as scheduled, and the government has allocated Rs. 2000 Million for further construction work related to the project. The project aims to irrigate 81,422 hectares in Central and North Central provinces benefiting over 100,00 families, in addition to providing drinking water and generating hydro-power.
The total cost of the project has been estimated as Rs. 64,358 Million, which will be funded by several foreign countries and aid
agencies Kuwait has already given Rs. 37 million for this project and the rest of the funds required are being provided by the Saudi Arabian government, the OPEC Fund for International Development, and the Japanese government.
The Mahaweli Authority will complete construction of one Saddle Dam of the project before the end of this year. The hydro power plant coming under this project will generate 20MW and it will be added to the National Grid.(niz)
