National Policy on Energy Development to be introduced soon
The Ministry of Power and Energy has taken steps to introduce a National Energy Policy to overcome the challenges faced by the energy sector while contributing actively to national development, Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne said.
Minister Seneviratne said that there were many obstacles which inhibits the energy sector from contributing to national development due to the shortsighted policies adopted by various governments in the past.
The National Energy Policy will focus on short term, medium term and term strategies, identifying the sectors that should receive priority attention.
The National Policy on Energy will focus attention on strategies for regularizing electricity generation, transmission and distribution; development of electricity supply, optimum utilization of local recourses, maintenance of a strategic balance among the imported fossil fuels, distribution of electricity among 20% of the rural population without electricity, investments on energy services, operation, regularization and distribution of energy services.
The National Energy Policy to be implemented soon could be reviewed in three years and the Ministry stresses that the energy sector would be employing strategies of energy development, qualitative development of the energy services, energy conservation, energy efficiency, energy management and consumer protection.
