“The teaching profession of teaching needs to be reviewed and brought to an honourable level”, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga said while participating in the Communicative English Training Programme for English teachers in Colombo schools held at Royal College, Colombo yesterday.
He stressed that this is how this nation can be built. He said that teaching English is a very special vocation as it empowers people. Proficiency in English and using the Language effectively is like having a passport. The program is aimed at improving Communicative English as a life skill among the Sri Lankans under the Mahinda Chinthana programme.
This island-wide programme will train nearly 22,000 teachers under the direction of a core group of teachers trained at the English and foreign Languages University in Hyderabad, India as master teachers.
