The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development will launch its fishery harbor development programme under the theme of “Let Us Protect Our Harbors “on the 25th of this month from the Mirissa Fisheries Harbor. The objective of the project is to make maximum and productive use out of physical and human resources available in the harbors.
Introducing the 5-S concept to the harbors, minimization of environmental damage, post harvest damage and introducing a streamlined programme for waste management are some of the features anticipated under the programme.
The Mirissa Fisheries Harbour was established in the year 1966 in a land area of 2.44 hectares and the harbor basin covers 7 hectares. It has a Quay wall of 458 meters and a main breakwater and a sub breakwater.
Under the harbor development programme a kerosene supply facility to cater to the one day boats, providing about 50 pallets to minimize the damage being caused to fish harvest in unloading, a gas distribution unit, a floating pier for watching Whales and Dolphins are being established.
Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dr.Rajitha Senarathne addressing a media conference in Colombo yesterday enlightening the media personnel on the new programme said that other fisheries harbors will also be developed with similar facilities with the objective of uplifting Sri Lankan fisheries harbours to the standards of the Fisheries Harbours in the leading fishing countries in the world.
