Information and Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, speaking at the Cabinet new briefing held in the Parliamentary Complex yesterday (July 24), refuted claims that the Government had put a halt to operations against the LTTE in the Wanni.
The minister pointed out that identified Tiger bases continue to be subjected to air attacks.
“The UNP criticises the victories of the Security Forces attempting to tarnish the good image of the country and spreads false propaganda locally and internationally at a time when the cooperation of all is pivotal to eradicate terrorism,” he said.
The minister reiterated the position of the Government with respect to negotiations with the LTTE, unequivocally stating that unless the LTTE lays down its weapons there can be no meaningful talks with the terrorist outfit.
The Government had earlier dismissed the LTTE’s ‘unilateral declaration of a ceasefire’ to coincide with the SAARC Summit as a gimmick typical of an organization which is wont to offer the olive branch when under severe pressure in the battlefield, only to regroup, re-arm and renege on agreements.
Minister Yapa observed that the UNP has accepted the unilateral ceasefire proposals of the LTTE.
