Earnings of the Railways Department have increased according to Railways Commercial Superintendent Wijaya Samarasinghe.
He said the department had earned an income of over four Billion rupees last year and that it is an increase of 74 Million rupees than the set target. Their target for last year was 3946 million rupees. The Department aims to earn an income of five billion rupees this year.
He pointed out that the earnings of the department in 2008 were 3671 Million rupees. In 2009, their target was to earn 3940 Million rupees. However, the earnings increased to 4020 Million rupees. It is a 10 percent increase against 2008.
This year, Mr. Samarasinghe added that their target was to earn five billion rupees. They were able to earn this amount by leasing Railway land and property and also from rentals.
