The Army 57 division , operating on the main axis of the Wanni theatre of operations are now successfully maneuvering towards the Kilinochchi town, the administrative hub of the LTTE terrorists, say the defence sources.

Daylong clashes were reported yesterday (Nov 13) as troops of 571 and 572 brigades marched further northwards destroying LTTE positions along the western boundary of the Kilinochchi built-up.

Troops had a series of confrontations with the terrorists in the South Pudimurippukulam area, about 6 Km North of Akkarayankualm tank bund . Intercepted LTTE radio transmissions confirmed heavy damages to the terrorists. Troops found one body of an LTTE cadre and 3 T-56 riffles during subsequent search operations.

Meanwhile , the foremost fighting elements 571 brigade attacked a group of terrorists in the Adampan area , 9 Km north of Akkarayankulam tank bund in the evening hours. Intercepted LTTE radio transmissions confirmed severe damages to the terrorists. Also, troops of 574 brigade operating on the eastern flank of the Kilinochchi front engaged terrorists in the Mankulam area at several occasions during daytime.

Meanwhile , intercepted LTTE radio transmissions revealed that senior LTTE leader called “Lieutenant Colonel Kali Arasan” was killed in clashes on Wednesday (Nov 12)

Wanni Operation continues; terrorists at their last legs in Wanni west

The Army Task force 1 troops operating in the western half of the Kilinochchi battle frontage have reached a decisive stage in their mission, as they have successfully sealed off over 90% of the 80 km long northwestern coast of the island. Following the recent liberation of Nachchikuda, the Task Force 1 now has continuous domination over 70 Km stretch of the strategically vital Mannar- Pooneryn (A-32) road.

According to the battlefield reports received so far, the Task Force 1 are now on an accelerated march towards Poonaryn; crushing remaining terrorist footholds on the northwestern coast.

Heavy confrontations were reported from the Palayilkulam area throughout yesterday (Nov 3) as the terrorists were making a desperate attempt to slowdown the advancing soldiers. Troops following a confrontation occurred around 1 PM found one body of a slain LTTE cadre along with a T-56 riffle.

During the morning hours, Army Commandos attacked a group of LTTE cadres in the Ponnaveli area inflicting heavy damages to the terrorists. Meanwhile, Army Special Forces soldiers ambushed a group of LTTE cadres traveling on a tractor in the Uruthirapuram area in the afternoon hours, causing heavy damages to the terrorists. Separate clashes were also reported from the Mukkamvillu area during the day.

Meanwhile, intercepted LTTE radio transmissions have revealed that senior terrorist leader, Ilakoon was killed during the confrontation in the Navalladi area, on Sunday (Nov 2). The slain terrorist leader was a self styled “Lieutenant Colonel” of the LTTE and a member of the ground fighters of the Sea Tigers.

Defence observers are in the view that the terrorists are fast loosing their hold in the northwestern coast of the island.

Navy elites crush LTTE seaborne offensive; fighter jets target fleeing terrorist boats [Updated]

Air Force fighter jets have pounded LTTE boats struggling to each at Champion-Paththu coast after being beaten off by the Navy this morning (1st November). Air Force media spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara told defence.lk that air strikes were taken at 8.30 a.m. He added that two tiger boats destroyed and 3 LTTE terrorists were killed in the attack, citing intelligence reports.

Sri Lanka Navy’s elite special boat squadron (SBS) and Rapid action boat squadron (RABS) intercepted a fleet of LTTE attack boats around 5.45, this morning, Off-Nagarkovil sea. According to the Naval sources, the LTTE fleet consisted over 15 boats.

Navy elites attacked the terrorists boats using their very own special fighting technique, and destroyed 4 LTTE craft and inflicted damages to another.

Intercepted LTTE radio transmissions have revealed that 14 LTTE cadres including 7 brain-washed suicide carders were killed and another 16 were wounded.

According to the Navy sources 5 sailors were injured in action.

According to the radio intercepted reports, 7 senior LTTE sea tiger cadres including Paduman master, Pulikutti, Seran, Kannan and Kalai-madhi were among the dead.

Indian team due to start work on undersea power cable

A team of Indian experts is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka within the next few days to begin work on the construction of a submarine electricity cable between India and Sri Lanka following the agreement signed recently, Power and Energy Ministry sources said.
According to the Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Senaviratne, this undersea electricity cable will run from Madurai in India to Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka.

The total estimated cost of the project is USD 450 million.

The project aims to link the electricity grids of India and Sri Lanka to enable Sri Lanka to purchase electricity from India. Under the project, India will supply up to 1,000 megawatts of electricity to Sri Lanka to overcome the power crisis in the country.

Work is expected to be completed by 2012.

The project includes an overhead transmission line from Madurai to Rameswaram, an undersea cable from Rameswaram to Thalaimannar, and another overhead transmission line from there to Anuradhapura.

The initial study for this project has already been completed and, according to the Ministry, the Indian team will arrive for its implementation soon.
